The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives on Monday arrested Coast Bottlers CEO Ibrahim Al Khoury and 22 Mombasa MCAs over bribery claims.
Reports indicate that the CEO, together with the MCAs who are members of the health committee, were arrested at the Coca-Cola company located at Kikambala, Kilifi County during an inspection tour.
The MCAs were carrying out an inspection following an incident where ward reps allegedly found pieces of cotton wool in five bottles of Coca-Cola's Dasani water.
It is believed the MCAs resorted to touring the plant after the committee on Thursday questioned Al Khoury over the incident.
According to The Star, the MCAs were allegedly given a bribe after they sought to find out if the product had effects on consumers.
"These people are very corrupt. They were found taking a bribe in broad daylight and were later grilled at the EACC offices in Mombasa,” said a source quoted by The Star.
EACC Coast region boss Simon Cherpka, however, declined to issue a statement, saying the MCAs were still being grilled.
Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) suspended production of the bottled water at the plant, until the company is given a clean bill of health.
