The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched a probe into the alleged Mombasa County Sh1.9bn garbage collection tender scandal.
In an interview with the Nation, the commission’s spokesperson Yunis Aila said the team is investigating the matter following concerns raised by Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar on Monday.
Aila, however, declined to disclose details of the scandal facing Governor Hassan Joho and other county officials, saying the commission will soon present the findings to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“It is just a matter of time before we conclude investigations and hand over our findings to the relevant authorities for action,” he said, as quoted by Nation.
On Monday, Senator Omar said the matter has taken too long to be investigated and urged the relevant authorities to prosecute the persons behind the scandal as soon as possible.
“Despite incontrovertible evidence before the EACC, there has been no prosecutions. Whether public officials or private citizens, those involved in the irregular award of a contract and payment amounting to Sh1 billion or more over the past three to four years should be prosecuted,” he said.
The senator further said the war against corruption will not be won if there is favoritism.
“The noose of prosecution and conviction must tighten around its entire perpetrators, regardless of affiliations whether ethnic, political or other considerations,” he added.
