Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)has unearthed a scandal to steal a 10 Million worth vehicle belonging to the County Government of Garissa.
According to the EACC spokesman Yasin Aila, the county government imported 27 vehicles for the county but only 26 were delivered even though all of them were paid for and cleared at the Port of Mombasa.
He told the press today that the commission had been doing investigation for two years now since they got the information and finally discovered the vehicle hidden in one of the godowns in Mombasa.
Aila said that the purchase of the 27 vehicles was done in the 2014/2015 financial year and a local purchase order of sh 186,822,000 issued to the importing company, Alama Trading Company.
“Surprisingly the money paid for the same order was sh 246,932,000 for 27 vehicles yet only 26 were delivered”, he said explaining the reasons why the commission was concerned and started tracking the missing one.
He said when they finally found the vehicle parked in inside the KENCONT container Freight Services (CFS) warehouse at Mbaraki, it was being cleared yet again, but this time for a private owner and not Garissa County.
Aila said EACC immediately ordered the warehouse not to release the vehicle until investigations to establish the bona fide owner were completed.
He said that the fresh clearance was being done using fake documents and duty of one Million shillings duty had already been paid.
“We are investigating to establish why this vehicle was not released to the County government and how the cost of the vehicles jumped from sh 186,822,000 to Sh 246,932,000,” Aila said.
