The Ethics and anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) boss, Philip Kinisu resigned after citing that he was being targeted by corrupt officials.
His family company, Esaki Limited, is accused of having involved itself in the National youth Service (NYS) scandal where millions of shillings were swindled. He becomes the fifth man to leave office after being enjoined in corruption cases.
Formed in early 1997, EACC was initially known as the Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority (KACA). It was set up to fight corruption cases in the country.
As KACA , Harun Mwau was appointed the first Director in December 1997. He however only served in office for six months where he was suspended and later removed from. He went ahead to claim that those he was fighting against were responsible for his demise in office.
In March 1999, Mwau was replaced by Justice Aaron Ringera who served for the longest time spanning 10 years. He also faced ups and downs in his service while at KACC (changed from KACA to KACC in 2003). He faced the parliamentary committee which eventually ousted him out of office for claims of inefficiency at work.
Then came Prof P.L.O Lumumba who took over form Ringera and promised to work against all corrupt officials both in and out of the government. His zeal of work amused many and his tremendous speeches made people believe he was the right man for he job.
He however failed to even make it one year in office. He was ousted out of office through a parliamentary process in 2010 and he again cited opposition from corrupt officials as the main reason he was taken out of office.
EACC was eventually established on September 5, 2011 and it replaced KACC. Mumo Matemu then took office in August 5, 2013 after fighting graft cases against him even before assuming office.
For Mumo, he had to fight a graft case before assuming office as a person set to hunt down corrupt officials. He eventually faced the same fate as his predecessors and barely 2 years in office, he gave his resignation citing unfavourable working conditions. He was later replaced by Philip Kinisu in January 2016.
For Kinisu, the tides hit him so fast before he could settle down to hunt corrupt officials. He was turned from predator to prey and was hunted by the alleged Corrupt masked men in the country who wanted him out of his. His Esaki Limited company was embroiled in the NYS saga and he eventually resigned on August 31, 2016 leaving the EACC chair's seat vacant.
All these resignations and change of leadership at the anti-graft body only shows that the seat is hot to handle and may be no one will get the chance to help weed out corruption in the country.
