Kisii Level Five Hospital Head of Cancer Department Dr Julius Kerore has advised residents to go for cancer screening at least once in a year.

Speaking at a Kisii hotel during a meeting that brought together doctors, stakeholders and cancer patients from the region, Kerore said that cancer is now becoming a major killer but that it could be treated if diagnosed at an early stage.

The doctor noted that according to the World Health Organisation, cancer claims more than 80 per cent of patients every year compared to any other disease.

“I urge Kenyans to be going for cancer testing as frequently as possible so that it can be discovered early for it to be treated. For us as a department we will ensure that we make treatment of cancer affordable and anyone who is suffering from the disease should be brought to the hospital to reduce deaths that have recently been witnessed,” he said.

He added that people should not wait until they fall sick to seek treatment, hence the rise in cancer cases.

He called on all the stakeholders and the national government to up their game in sensitising citizens about the disease.
