Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers are being trained by the Mandera county government on the new education curriculum.
Deputy Governor Mohamed Arai said they are conducting a two-day teachers’ training course on the new basic education curriculum framework.
Mr. Arai said it is a devolved function adding that the county government is also keen on improving the education sector of the county.
Speaking while presiding over the event at the Riverside Hotel, Mr. Arai said the training course aims at building the capacity of the teachers so as to secure a firm foundation for the children’s education.
The deputy governor further said that the implementation of the new curriculum was reached after extensive stakeholder engagement adding that the framework is aligned to the Constitution of Kenya, vision 2030 and the need to harmonize the curriculum with other East African countries as well as several other policy documents that express the aspirations of the country.
“The purpose of basic education curriculum reforms is to provide a comprehensive conceptualization of the basic education in pre-primary, primary and secondary education.”
“Our role as county government is to fully implement the pre-primary education which is a devolved function. This is in addition to supporting other levels of education in line with our manifesto,” said Mr. Arai.
He also said that the Mandera County government will employ ECDE teachers to enhance education standards in the county and improve performance.
“This acts as a stop-gap measure to fill the gaps left by the non-local teachers who fled the county during the height of terror attacks in 2015 and 2016,” said the deputy governor.
