Kariuki who was speaking in her office on Wednesday said many children will be experiencing the rains for the first time and could not be aware of the dangers associated with a down pour of such magnitude.

"When we had El Nino rains in 1997, many children who are in school now were not born. So, let us not forget them now that they are back in school. Teachers and parents must be in the forefront to educate them on the dangers of the rains," said Kariuki.

She added: "They must be taught all the precautionary measures they ought to take whenever caught up in the rains".

Kariuki said heavy down pour bring excitement to children which could be a recipe for accidents and fatalities.

At the same time she asked parents in the region whose little children will be crossing swollen streams and rivers to and from school to consider escorting them to ensure their safety.
