The Kisumu County government has been asked to allocate funds towards the purchase and supply of free sanitary towels to public schools.
Kisumu Minority leader Edwin Anayo said that most school going girls from less privileged families normally suffer a lot during their monthly periods.
Speaking on Monday during the morning session at the county assembly, the Market Ward representative said that the county government ought to provide free sanitary towels to public schools to aid girls from poverty stricken families.
He told the assembly that it was so unfortunate that even with the devolved government system, residents were still not getting access to resources and other facilities that should be provided by the government.
“It is so unfortunate that the county government is not reaching out to poor families that suffered neglect during the central governance. School going girls should not be allowed to suffer and use tissue papers and clothes during menstruation when we have devolution in Kisumu,” said Anayo.
Anayo challenged the County Education CeC Jennifer Kere to ensure that funds were allocated in the next financial year to go towards the purchase of the sanitary towels.
