The Principal Secretary for Education Dr Belio Kipsang Tuesday launched a study that assessed the competency skills that Class 3 pupils have in Mathematics, English and Kiswahili, as well as their life skills.
The event was held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
The study code-named National Assessment System for Monitoring Learner Achievement, is part of the Kenya Primary Education Project (PRIEDE), aimed at improving the teaching and learning of Mathematics by six million pupils in class 1 and 2 in public primary and informal schools in Kenya.
The government is implementing the project in conjunction with Global Partnerships of Education (GPE), which gave Kenya a grant of $88.4 million (Sh8.84 billion) towards the financing of the project.
The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Education, the Kenya National Examinations Council and the Teachers Service Commission, and being supervised by the World Bank.
An important aspect of the project entails strengthening Capacity for evidence –based policy development at national level. Accordingly, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) conducted the study to establish the competence levels of class 3 pupils in Mathematics, English and Kiswahili, as well as life skills.
The findings will provide foundation upon which to improve the implementation of the curriculum in order to improve learning outcomes in Mathematics, English, and Kiswahili as well as life skills.
