The sub-county Director of Education in Kibera on Friday called on all teachers to take their career seriously.
Speaking to teachers at Jamuhuri Primary School grounds on Friday, Benjamin Muthengi said the teachers should not let children suffer because of their misunderstanding with the state.
"These strikes that you are always holding in protest of your salary increase is only affecting children and their parents because they are the ones paying the school fees. It is heart breaking," said Muthengi.
"I am sure even your conscience tells you that you are punishing the children. Please be thinking before striking," he added.
Mr Muthengi however told teachers to try and cover syllabuses because it was not advised for pupils to be promoted to another class next year if they had not covered the previous class syllabus.
He however, advocated for school ranking to enhance healthy and organised competition.
His sentiments were received well by the pupils who said they want to know which schools have performed well.
Mr Muthengi urged the Ministry of Education under Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi to start school ranking exercise because it is said to be the only way to know how schools are competing.
