Parents have been urged to collaborate with school management boards to curb student unrest witnessed in schools recently.
Speaking during an education crisis meeting in Kisii University held on Tuesday, Kisii County Secondary School Heads Association ( KESSHA) Chairman Jairus Onchoke said that there have been cases of student unrest in secondary schools within Kisii County, citing indiscipline and inadequate preparedness among learners as the prime causes.
Onchoke said a number of schools had experienced mysterious fires destroying school property with investigations pointing to arson.
He said some parents were to blame for failure to guide their children to respect school rules and regulations, hence increasing the number of indiscipline cases in schools.
“It is common practice that no student should carry mobile phones to school, but some parents help their children sneak the gadgets into school in the name of helping them keep close communication with home,” he added.
The boss head mentioned that there were cases where students attempted to torch their schools and asked all Boards of Management to put their institutions under a 24-hour surveillance to curb cases of arson.
“Some students and security guards have been arrested and charged with different criminal activities with regard to the recent school unrests,” he added
This comes barely a day after Nyamache Boys burned their dormitories and less than a week after Itierio Boys burned down the school.
