A top educator in the country is seeking five children from the slum areas in Nairobi to benefit from a scholarship programme.
Former Alliance High School Principal Christopher Khaemba said the scholarships will go to bright but needy students in slums who sat for their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) last year and received admission letters to national schools.
"We are looking for five students from a humble background to benefit from this programme. We are aware that a good number of bright boys and girls admitted to some of the country's most prestigious schools will not be able to report due to lack of fees," Khaemba said on Sunday.
He said the funding is done by a US-based firm, Capital and Growth, which is headed by Jasper Kuria, a former student of Alliance High School.
Khaemba, who is also the co-founder and director of Nova Academies, reported that last year five students from Damasca Community Education Centre from Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums in Embakasi, benefited from the programme.
Students admitted to national schools have until Friday this week to take up their positions failing which their slots will be taken up by other students whose parents can afford to pay.
Last week, Education CS Fred Matiang'i maintained the government had put in place measures to ensure 100 percent transition from primary to secondary school levels.
