Egerton University library has embarked on a major information literacy training workshop to boost the consumption of electronic information.
The move is targeted at the university’s community in all its campuses.
The in-charge of the Electronic Resources department section of the library Felistus Ratanya says the training workshops will be carried out in two phases every semester. The trainings will target students and academic staff.
She said the training is necessary to promote the use of peer reviewed journals and books on-line and will be continuous.
“These workshops will be continuous every time the university admits new students or staff. It will ensure that a culture of digital information consumption is attained at the university,” said Ratanya.
The university librarian Janerose Kinyanjui said it was the responsibility of the library department to impart information literacy skills among information users.
She said, “Modern trends in the acquisition and dissemination of information resources have greatly been influenced by the digital era. Hence, there is a need for libraries and other information centres to adapt and update their users.”
Kinyanjui added that the university’s management dedicates more than Sh10 million every financial year to subscribe to thousands of electronic journals and books to boost training and research at the university.
“We have a duty as information providers to help the university attain its academic goals by assisting students and staff access relevant information resources to enhance learning and research,” she observed.
The two spoke when the workshop was launched on Friday.
