Egerton University members of staff have been urged to take serious their savings plans as they get ready for retirement.
Speaking on saturday during this year’s Annual General Meeting, Egerton University Retirement Benefits Scheme Secretary Rose Odhiambo said it was important for members to save more as they wait to retire.
The Retirement benefits boss observed that it was important for individual members of the scheme to focus well on separate savings apart from the retirement benefits, in order for them to enrich their welfare outside employment.
“We are not here to stay forever but just for a period. I urge you to focus on your savings and plan for your last day of employment. Things will be okay if you save and plan but you will have it rough if you don’t, ‘’ said Odhiambo.
She further added that some retired people were languishing in poverty and depression because of poor planning.
According to the official, many employees fail to save but take loans and squander the money without considering their retirements.
She reiterated that the government had no fixed retirement age but could announce changes any time, hence employees ought to be wary and plan ahead for any eventuality.
