Egerton University students in Njoro campus are planning to impeach the newly elected Students Union of Egerton University (SUEU) Chairman Isaac Ongoma for corruption and misconduct allegations. According to the students who spoke to HiviSasa.com, Ongoma has been a disgrace to the students and full of self interest instead of the students’ interest. According to Egerton Western Chairman Joel Aholi, Ongoma has misappropriated some funds which were contributed for families of two students who were shot dead by police. In a written statement drafted by Aholi, Ongoma is accused of giving only a quarter of the contribution to the family of the deceased. “The late Felix association funeral contributions which were channelled through class representatives and well wishers to DHT as ordered by the chairman SUEU have gone untraced,” read part of the statement. Aholi alleges that out of the 153 pro forma copies produced, the association has received 42 with a collection of Ksh43,000 thus raising accountability questions. The students have started collecting impeachment signature and as confirmed by Joseph Ndirangu, a 3rd year student, 620 signatures have been collected so far and members are still signing up. Ongoma is also accused of failing to organise Egerton farewell busses and vans to carry the body of the late Felix which was ferrying from Nairobi to Nakuru and then to Western in an “old pick-up.” According to David Wanjala, a student, it was disgraceful for the deceased to be ferrying to Western Kenya from Nairobi in old pick up tracks yet the university has almost seven vehicles including a van. Ongoma was unreachable by the time of going to press.
