Students pursuing agriculture and research related courses at Egerton University will offer free extension services and advice to farmers in Nakuru County as one of the ways of giving back to the society.
The students will offer the services by organising farmers’ field days in all sub-counties across the county.
According to Prof. Gilbert Ndegwa, a lecturer at the university’s School of botany in Njoro, their aim is to help the county in achieving the status of a food secure county by investing in technology and helping farmers adopt new farming methods.
Speaking on Tuesday afternoon when they held a field day and free farming school for farmers in Njoro, Prof. Ndegwa said that the extension services will help farmers in improving their farming methods hence increasing productivity.
“Egerton University is known as the best school for agriculture related courses and since we are in Nakuru County we have decided to give back to the society by organising free field days where our students will offer free extension services and farming advice to farmers as one way of transforming the agricultural sector in the county,” said Prof. Ndegwa.
He added, “We will move to all sub-counties where we will be meeting farmers to teach them how best they can transform their farms into money making farms.”
Ndegwa said that they have enough students to cover all the sub-counties in Nakuru and called on farmers to take the initiative seriously because it will benefit them a lot.
