The highly anticipated 'big debate' at Egerton university Nakuru Town campus held on Wednesday at the university's was largely peaceful.
Apart from a few incidences of booing and heckling of aspirants, no serious incidents of breach of peace was noted in an event which was feared could spiral out of control.
The chilly weather and light showers that greeted the Wednesday afternoon could not dampen the students spirits and they came in huge numbers ready to cheer on their favourite candidates.
Mercy Cherotich a third-year student admitted that her coming to the event was largely due to loyalty to her favourite contestants.
"Yes the weather is quite bad but that can't stop me from coming over to cheer my colleagues," she said.
The event which came only a day before elections of student leaders is held is always used by aspiring student leaders to market their agenda.
To some contestants, the crowd's reception was enough to confirm who would carry the day as Francis Ouma Okoth an aspiring director education affairs summed it up.
"The crowd's cheering is enough to confirm who is the boss. The seat is mine to lose," said tha third-year bachelor of education student.
However to others like Michael Kimotho who is running for the chairman's position, the crowd can not be relied on to conclude on the outcome of the elections.
"Most of the students who were cheering loudly were highly intoxicated and were therefore not in control if their senses. Come elections day and you will see them voting in different candidates from those they were cheering on," he said.
The dean of students Absalom Makinda, took an opportunity to allay fears of flawed elections adding that all measures had been put in place to ensure the exercise proceed smoothly.
"Everything is in place for the exercise and we hope you will turn up in large numbers just like today to vote in your candidates," he said.
Elections are set to be held on Friday.
