Kenyans have started feeling effects, after the government banned the importation of chicken and poultry products due to the outbreak of Bird Flu.
Busia chief Veterinary Officer Juma Ngeiywa directed all Public Health and Veterinary Officers at Malaba and Busia borders to ensure no poultry products are allowed in the Country until the situation in Entebbe normalises.
Through the Ministry of Agriculture, the government banned importation of chicken and poultry products from Uganda, after the disease killed several birds in parts of Uganda, including Entebbe, Sunday.
However, eggs and chicken products traders in parts of Western Kenya and Nyanza have started complaining that the ban is greatly affecting them.
They said they were unable to continue selling eggs, since they are now being sold at an increased rate.
"This is because it is now hard to find eggs. we used to import them from Uganda, but now we can not. Importations have been banned,'' said a trader at Lwanya, in Busia.
On average, Kenya imports Sh40 million poultry products annually, according to Livestock Principal Secretary Andrew Tuimur.
