Eight people have been confirmed dead and over 100 admitted to hospital after a cholera outbreak in Garissa and part of Tana river counties.

Speaking  to journalists in Garissa on Wednesday, Chief Health Officer Mohamed Farah said the county department of Health has put up measures to contain the spread of the disease.

According to him, more than 200 people had been diagnosed and treated in the past two weeks.

He noted that a team of professionals were already on the ground to ensure the disease is brought under control adding that all patients showing symptoms of cholera had been put under close observation.

Mr Farah explained explained that most cases at the Garissa County Referral Hospital isolation unit are from Tana River.

“We have put up all the necessary measures to contain the situation. Among the measures the department has undertaken to curb the spread of the contagious disease include treatment of water sources used by the residents in the two counties,” he stated.

The chief health officer urged the affected areas to observe high standards of hygiene in order to prevent the spread of the disease.

He also advised residents to be keen and rush any individuals with symptoms of headache, diarrhoea and weak joints to isolation centers in the county.
