Eight people have died while several others sustained serious injuries in a road accident along Nairobi - Mombasa Highway in Machakos County.
Six died on the spot while two others succumbed as they received treatment at Machakos Level Five Hospital following the Sunday's 2.30 am incident which occurred at Kwa Mwambi, several kilometers to Nairobi - Machakos turn off.
Confirming the incident on the phone, Machakos police boss Joseph Tenai said the accident involved a 14 passenger matatu and a truck.
Tenai said the speeding matatu which was moving from Makueni to Embu rammed into the stationary truck parked by the road side.
He said the matatu's driver tried to avoid head on collision with an oncoming vehicle when he lost its control.
Tenai said the victims had been admitted at Machakos Level Five Hospital while bodies moved to the same hospital's mortuary.
The vehicles wreckage were towed to Machakos Police Station as police launch investigations on the incident.
The incident caused a heavy traffic snarl up on the busy highway.
Tenai said police had managed the traffic and transport has returned to normality on Nairobi - Mombasa Highway.
