Five Administration Police officers and three police reservists were on Sunday killed by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Bojigaras, Wajir County.
The security officers were killed after their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The officers who are based at the Kutulo AP Camp where on a routine patrol when their vehicle hit the improvised device.
North Eastern regional coordinator Muhammad Saleh who confirmed the attack said they suspect the explosive device was planted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.
Mr Saleh said that a contingent of officers was sent to the area to pursue the attackers who managed to escape.
“A reinforcement was immediately sent to the scene after the attack. The attackers escaped soon after the blast and we suspect Al-Shabaab is behind it,” said the regional coordinator.
Wajir County Commander Stephen Ng’etich said the vehicle the officers were in hit the explosive device before the attackers fled towards the Somalia border.
“We received a report of a police vehicle which landed on an IED within Bojigaras and we are yet to get confirmation on the casualties from personnel who visited the scene,” said Mr Ng’etich as quoted by Nation.
Authorities last week warned that the terrorists were planning to stage attacks ahead of the end of Ramadan period.
