The suspects were arrested after the premises security guard Lenard screamed for help attracting the attention of neighbouring guards.

The guards joined forces to rescue their colleague who had been tied down then called for help from Thika police officers.

Several items including television sets, gas cookers, mattresses, woofers, microwaves and laptops were recovered in the 5am incident.

According to the deputy OCPD in Thika town Marie Kiarie, the eight were armed with pistols, machete, and a spear which were recovered at the scene where they had packed their carriage lorry.

‘We have been able to arrest eight thugs this morning who had broken into Nakumatt supermarket and were in the move to steal goods worth Sh1.2 million,” she said.

“We have recovered some weapons belonging to the suspects including a spear, pistols and a machete which were stashed near their get away lorry,” said Kiarie.

The shop manager Martin Murigi has decried the theft and urged the police to treat the ordeal seriously.

“The incident was awkward. I urge the police to seriously deal with the matter without hesitation,” said Kiarie.

He also thanked the police for collaborating with the area security guards to arrest the suspects.

The suspects are being held at Thika police station waiting to be arraigned in court to answer to charges of theft.
