The weather in Kibera on Wednesday changed abruptly sending panic among residents that the much talked about El Nino rains had begun.
However, some residents put their jerricans outside to harvest the rain water but were disappointed as the light showers lasted a very short time.
Kibera has been experiencing water shortage for close to a week and residents had earlier blamed the Nairobi Show for the shortage.
However, the show concluded on Sunday and yet there is no water in the area.
Speaking to this writer, DC residents said they believe the government will come to their rescue during the El Nino period.
They said they fear their houses and property could be destroyed by the heavy rains.
“I don’t really know if today’s rains is an indicator that there will be El Nino but I am sure the government is well prepared to help us if the down pour becomes too much for us to bear,’’ said Lindi Mwasame.
Gabriel Litu said the rains made him believe the El Nino alert that had been issued by the Met department.
“I had not believed in the alert, I always told myself that there will be no El Nino. From today’s rain, I am shocked at how the weather changed so abruptly. I am now convinced that the El Nino alert is real,” he added.
Litu now wants fellow residents to take the alert seriously and try to keep warm during the period.
