A nominated senator has opposed the weekend rallies by the Coalition for Reformation of Democracy (Cord) in western region’s sugar belt claiming they were bent on confusing sugarcane farmers.

Alliance Party of Kenya Senator Beatrice Elachi said the residents were capable of solving their own problems without the politically motivated rallies.

Speaking at Kerema in Bobasi Constituency, Kisii County during a thanksgiving mass for Catholic Brother, Elias Mokua, the senator alleged sugar importation from Uganda was not a new phenomenon.

At the event which was presided by Bishop Joseph Obanyi from Western Province, Elachi said the critics were silent when the essential commodity was being sold in retail outlets and urged cane farmers to be careful so as not to be misled.

She called on the residents to respect free trade in the East African Community member states saying it would propel Kenya to greater economic heights.

The remarks come as confusion shrouds the alleged signing of an agreement on sugar importation from Uganda that sparked off an exchange between the opposition and Jubilee government.
