Elderly people in Njoro Sub County have been urged to register with relevant government offices in order to benefit from social support funds. While addressing members of the public and traders at Njoro Wakulima Market during the launch of a new water supply project yesterday, Njoro sub county commissioner Mohamed Noor said many elderly people were languishing in poverty and ill health because they do not have information on government support programmes. The commissioner urged other residents to create awareness among elderly people especially in the interior parts of the sub county about government incentives for the elderly so that they can benefit. “Many elderly people in Njoro have not registered in my office and other government offices that are concerned with support programmes. They should be advised to come out and register for them to benefit from such programmes," said Noor. He observed that only a few of the elderly people benefited from the Elderly Cash Transfer programme during the last year yet statistics indicate that the area has more of the elderly people who benefited from the funds. The commissioner further warned residents to be wary of con people purporting to be officials representing the government in various projects and programmes like that of the elderly. "Some people claim to be registering elderly for the cash transfer money while others claim to be Youth Uwezo Fund agents. Be warned that con people are on the prowl,’’ he said.
