An elderly woman is nursing injuries at Thika Level Five Hospital after she was rescued from a house on fire by neighbours.
Wambui Gachuru, 83, was cooking at around 7.30pm when the fire broke out at her grass thatched house on Monday in Witeithie, Juja sub-county.
According to the neighbours, clothes near the fire place ignited as she cooked using an open fire in the same house she sleeps in.
The victim, because of her age, could not shout nor run away from the house and this made it hard for anyone to notice the fire until a child on the road saw it and shouted for help.
Confirming the incident, area AP boss Sergeant James Linguli said that he was informed by the residents who had already rescued the woman.
He expressed his gratitude to the victim’s neighbours for acting fast to save the woman from the inferno.
“The residents have shown a positive attitude towards helping the victim. I urge everyone to be careful when dealing with fire to avoid such incidents,” Linguli said.
Following the incident, Thika sub-county police boss Shadrack Maithya said that residents in the area have not been taking precautions when dealing with fire which is resulting in disasters.
The victim’s house burnt to ashes and Witeithie Ward MCA Peter Muiruri has offered to take care of the woman.
