Kisumu County Assembly members have asked the Luo Council of Elders to stop engaging in too much politics rather than enhancing unity in the community.

The council has also been asked to promote the region’s culture and traditions aimed at pulling the community together.

Nyalenda A ward representative, Jackton Onunga, said that the council has over the years engaged in too much politics at the expense of their mandate in the society.

Speaking at his ward office in Nyalenda, the MCA accused the council of not enhancing unity and culture of the community.

“The council’s main office located at Ofafa hall in Kisumu nowadays is a beehive of political talks and deals and not the welfare of the Luo community as it was in the past. They need to know that the history, culture and traditions of the whole community lies with them and so they should safeguard them to ensure that they don’t get washed away or become obsolete,” said Onunga.

His Nyalenda B counterpart Oyugi Were also asked the council to stick to its major mandate or risk being declared irrelevant by the community.

“The council should promote unity among other roles or risk being irrelevant to the community,” he said.
