Elders drawn from the four counties in Nyanza region have started a forum to link development in Luo-Suba regions to community participation.

The forum chairperson Dr Phoebe Nyawalo said they are pushing for public participation on how devolved system works in the counties.

Nyawalo said they have brought together elders who had worked and retired to come up with ideas that can help in the management of the counties.

“Here are elders from Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori counties, they worked in several fields and now retired. They have a wealth of experience that must be put together for the benefit of our counties,” she said.

She said public participation is critical to ensure public resources are effectively used for the people in the counties.

Speaking in Kisumu on Friday during the launch of the forum, Nyawalo said awareness creation must be created among the people on how they can participate towards development in their areas.

Elder Adel Kitoto said the Luo-Suba community is lagging behind in terms of development.

Kitoto said most universities in the region are only full with students from other regions and called upon the community to invest in education.
