Violent clashes erupted in July along the Nandi-Kisumu border following reports that Nandi youth had crossed the border to Kisumu and drove away cattle.

Five people during the week-long fighting were killed as thousands fled their homes.

ODM party leader Raila Odinga on Sunday chaired the meeting that saw elders from both sides of the border sign a pact ending cattle rustling.

The meeting that took place in Kibigori is the second in three months after another chaired by Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma took place shortly after the clashes.

"I chaired a peace meeting drawing sections of elders and residents of the Nandi and Luo border area of Kibigori. I convened the meeting in search of lasting between the two neighbouring communities," Raila said.

Luo Council of Elders Willis Otondi thanked his counterparts from Nandi saying the move to resolve differences and unite the two communities was long overdue.

The border at Kibigori is known for cattle rustling and every time the incidents occur violent clashes erupt as houses are torched.
