A clan settlement that might see the entire political governance in the North Eastern counties replaced with new leadership is gaining momentum.
Three weeks ago, a twenty-member Garre Council of Elders met at the border town of Banisa and resolved that most leaders in the county should never defend their seats come the 2017 elections for the sake of the community’s intergration in the 20 sub clans.
However, similar forms of the negotiated democracies appear to be taking shape in Garissa and Marsabit counties, yielding heated debates as political leaders take different positions.
During a ceremony attended by hundreds of locals and elected leaders at Bourargy Primary School on Saturday, the Abduwak clan in Garissa endorsed Ali Korane for governorship against Governor Nathif Jama.
This now seems to be the final decision making organ in the county leadership, given the fact that Garissa County is dominated by Ogaden community that has three clans; the Abdulwak, Auliyan and Samawathal
