More leaders and elders from Coast region are pilling pressure on the leadership of the counties of Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, Tana River and Taita Taveta to field a presidential candidate during the 2022 presidential election.
Kaya elders on Monday backed efforts by a section of some elected leaders in the region to field a presidential election about four years from today when President Uhuru Kenyatta exits State House.
Kaya Elders chairman Emmanuel Katana said Coast region will no longer play second fiddle to any party the way it has done over the years.
Katana said Coast has leaders with the potential of making some of the best presidents will ever have.
"We are fully in support of the idea of Coast fielding a presidential candidate in 2022. We have supported for a long time and this time round they should equally support us," Katana said.
The elders spoke four days after Coast region MPs, Aisha Jumwa (Malindi), Owen Baya (Kilifi North), Teddy Mwambire (Ganze) and Ali Mbogo (Kisauni) addressed a leaders meeting in Mombasa and concluded the region will have a presidential candidate during the fourth coming polls.
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has already expressed interest in vying for the country's top seat in 2022.
"For now, we have resolved to launch our own party and we will not depend on any party when that time comes," Kataa said.
