A section of elders from Likoni has urged police to extend the amnesty period provided for members of different criminal gangs to surrender. The elders on Thursday said they are worried police officers are likely to kill innocent people in their pursuit of criminal gang members who have been terrorising residents in the area. The elders made the request after police put on notice 200 suspected members of different gangs operating in the constituency. The elders, led by their chairman Genge Abdalla claimed that they are aware of a special force formed to rid the region of criminals. The elders warned security personnel against using force to deal with the criminal gangs without proper investigations being conducted. They further said that they have intentions of meeting the deputy county commissioner over the matter before police execute their plan. “We have reports that there are 200 members who are on police watch but according to our statistics, they are over 1000. If police use force against these youth, we are going to lose as parents,” said Abdalla, as quoted by Baraka FM.This comes after about 60 criminals on Saturday attacked local residents leaving three injured and one dead in Jamvi la Wageni area in Likoni.
