Nasa threatened to do so should President Uhuru Kenyatta be sworn in as president elect. The elders have termed the opposition's threat as a treason. According to the Council's chairman Phares Ruteere, a move to swear-in Raila would amount to intimidation of voters who voted for Uhuru in the October 26 repeat presidential poll. Ruteere who is also the secretary general of Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders, further noted that the former prime minister should wait until 2022 to vie for presidency again since he withdrew from the October election. “Uhuru was able to sell his development agenda in most of the counties, save for those in Nyanza and a part of Western. He commands a lot of support across Kenya and that is why residents were able to give him votes as Raila stayed away,” Ruteere said on Monday as quoted by Standard. He also called on elders and clergy to be peace ambassadors. “We should leave the debate on legal issues in the country to Parliament. Elders and the clergy should put more efforts in spreading peace messages across Kenya,” he said.
