The group which comprises of diabetics said many young people are consuming a lot of sugary foods which can be dangerous to their health. They narrated their experience in living with the disease.

‘‘Many young people at the age of 30 are suffering from diabetes. They, however, blame it on other things but the truth is that they themselves are to blame. They consume a lot of sugar which is not good for their health,’’ said Daudi Mwela.

Bram Onyango said junk food such as ice cream, which is common among school going children in Kibera, is one of the contributing factors. He said the money they are given for lunch is what the students use to buy the ice cream.

‘‘Many children buy ice cream. They take in too much sugar which is harmful to their health. Other children drink undiluted juice which is not only sugary but has lots of chemicals as well. Parents should be keen not to allow their children to take in a lot of sugar because it causes diabetes,’’ said Onyango.
