Civil society in Eldoret town have expressed their dissatifaction with the proposed Security Bill saying that it could spell an era of human rights abuse and media gagging.
The Director of Centre for Human Rights and Democracy Kipkorir Ng'etich has said that the bill should have focused on strengthening the security systems of the country rather than creating a more powerful presidency.
"As the government seek to fight the rampant insecurity that the country has been going through,we are not happy by its infringement on the civil liberty we have been enjoying", said Ng'etich.
He also expressed his concern on the attempt to curtail a vibrant media. "You cannot stop objective journalism because in both developing and advanced worlds it is very important", Ng'etich said in his Eldoret office today after Jamhuri celebrations. He further said that the Opposition also risk being crippled.
"With NIS getting more powers, it could use them for the wrong purposes; either to gain or to keep power", he said.
