The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) has condemned Monday night incidences at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in which journalists covering the controversial return of Miguna Miguna were assaulted by plainclothes police officers.
CIPK Uasin Gishu chairman Sheikh Abubakar Bini termed the act as barbaric and out of order.
“As religious leaders, we want to condemn the act in the strongest terms possible. This is uncalled for and something needs to be done to end this mess, why should journalists be harassed while on their line of duty of informing the public,” said Bini in Eldoret town, Tuesday.
“Stern action must be taken against officers who assaulted journalists since it is against the law.The police officers who were involved in the act should be arrested and charged and even removed from the service,” he added.
The CIPK chairman said police are supposed to offer protection to the journalist and not to attack them.
“Police should treat journalists in a human way since they are not criminals,” he said.
Journalists covering the return of the self-proclaimed National Resistance Movement (NRM) general Miguna Miguna from Canada were attacked by the police who had been deployed to calm the situation following the drama that had ensued after Miguna 'resisted' government's attempt to deport him to Dubai.
