Religious leaders in Uasin Gishu County have expressed concerns over recent disagreements that have rocked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
This follows a move by the chairman Wafula Chebukati to suspect the Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba for three months over procurement malpractices.
Some of the IEBC commissioners are reported to be against the decision made by Chebukati.
Addressing the press in Eldoret town on Thursday, Uasin Gishu chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) Sheikh Abubakar warned that the push and pull among the IEBC commissioners might end up weakening the most important institution in the country.
“We are so concerned over the differences being reported among IEBC commissioners and it is a worry to us because this is an institution that is the pillar of our country’s democracy,” said Bini.
“When such things happen, the commission risks being infiltrated by politician and it will end up creating different camps that would be serving their political interests at the expense of other Kenyans,” he added.
The Uasin Gishu CIPK boss challenged the IEBC leadership to sit down and iron out their issues, failure to which he proposed that the Parliament should begin a process of dissolving the commission.
“The chairman and other commissioners must sit down and clear their differences if not the Parliament should ensure we have a new team in place that will work for the interests of the nation,” he said.
