Female alcohol addicts in Eldoret town have called on the county government of Uasin Gishu to intervene and help take them for rehabilitation.
In a rare move that shocked residents of the town, the ladies on Thursday in Eldoret told journalists that they had resolved to abandon beer, reform and contribute the development of the county.
The women's leader Magdalene Chebet said she started drinking way back in 1999 and that booze had ruined her life besides breaking her family.
"I think enough is enough, I have resolved to leave beer because it is not adding value to my life. My friends (her colleagues) have long stories to tell of how beer drinking has wasted them too," Chebet said in an interview with a local radio station.
"We want our governor Jackson Mandago to intervene. We are in urgent need of rehabilitation, we have resolved to start our lives a fresh, unite with our families and develop the county with the rest," she added
Uasin Gishu, according to the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) is among devolved units with the highest rates of alcoholism in Kenya.
Governor Mandago about a month ago instructed county officials to crack the whip and ensure no illegal beer consumption takes place in the county.
Most non-standard beer drinks consumed in Eldoret allegedly come from neighbouring Uganda.
Other women who claimed to be beer addicts who spoke to the press on behalf of others were Janet Chepchumba, Loyce Jebii and Monica Yegon.
