Women suffering from fistula have been urged to go for treatment.Gynocare Fistula Center Eldoret CEO Hillary Mabeya, said Fistula is a tear in a woman's bladder or rectum that causes constant urine or stool leakage."Two million women suffer from the condition, with 50,000 to 100,000 new cases occurring each year world wide. They should come for treatment since we do it free of charge," he said during the 2nd edition of Gynocare Fistula half marathon, Sunday."The main causes are prolonged labour, botched Caesarean sections and sexual assault," he added. He said most women with fistula live in remote areas, and were unaware that they could be healed with surgery. "They can't participate in family life because they smell like urine therefore no one wants to associate with them," noted Mabeya. Mabeya is the only surgeon at Gynocare, a centre that performs most Fistula surgeries in Kenya, at no cost."Since 2,000 I have performed over 2,500 operations on Fistula related cases free of charge,'' he said, Sunday, in Eldoret. The hospital which is located in Eldoret town along Kahoya road sees over 30-40 patients per day.
