A middle aged man was on Monday arraigned before an Eldoret court for allegedly spreading hate speech on social media.

According to court documents, the suspect, Meshack Kipkorir, shared a post threatening a certain community on his Facebook account on June 16, 2017.

The prosecution told the court that the post could have caused divisions and hatred among residents of Uasin Gishu County.

While appearing before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Charles Ombulutsa, the suspect denied the charges and was released on a Sh1 million cash bail.Hearing for the case was set for August 1, 2017.

The came comes days after the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) said it was monitoring several social media groups for spreading hate speech and incitements as the general elections draws nearer.
