A group of coffin sellers in Eldoret town is worried about what holds for the future of their business.
According to some sellers at Bandaptai building, their coffin business might close down due to lack of adequate timber used for making coffins.
This follows a 90-day ban which was imposed by the government on logging which the sellers complain that it has limited their access to timber.
“It has become difficult to get timber for making even one coffin and I am sure in the near future the locals will have nowhere to put their loved ones who have died," warned James Kimutai, a coffin maker.
The business people are now calling on the government to consider them so they can have access to this product.
“The government should consider those doing this business because this job is important as it helps so many people. Our customers suffer a lot whenever we fail to report to work due to lack of timber,” another businesswoman said.
With timber now becoming scarce, there has been an increase in the prices of coffins in Eldoret town with some retailing at double price. There are even fears that locals could find alternative ways of laying their beloved ones to rest if timber will remain to be a scarce commodity following the ban imposed on logging by the government.
Customers of the product have also not been left behind in the problem as they decry the high-cost one now has to incur before they can lay a body to rest.
