The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has been awarded for being the most improved facility in the provision of Postpartum Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (PPIUD) services in the country.
Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society (KOGS) together with the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) and the Ministry of Health had introduced PPIUD services into postpartum family planning (PPFP) in six teaching institutions including MTRH.
According to the hospital's Chief Executive Officer Dr. Wilson Aruasa, the project which is funded through FIGO seeks to improve counseling services among clients attending antenatal and delivery services and imparting skills as well as knowledge to healthcare professionals.
"We are expressing our gratitude to KOGS and FIGO for recognizing the efforts of Obstetrics and Gynaecology team at MTRH," said Dr. Aruasa after receiving the award on Wednesday.
"My administration is focused on improving customer experience across the Hospital," he added.
The award of excellence is from KOGS and FIGO following a review of the trends in the uptake of the PPIUD services across all the participating facilities in the reporting period of Phase 2 in 2018.
At MTRH, 99 percent of women who attended antenatal clinic were counseled for family planning including PPIUD out of which 8 percent consented for PPIUD, all of whom received the service upon delivery and subsequent follow-up in the postnatal period following insertion.
