Uasin Gishu residents have been blamed for the increased number of street children in Eldoret CBD.

According to Uasin Gishu Children Services Director Julius Yator, residents are fond of giving them handouts thus encouraging the growth of street families.

“It sad that despite our efforts of removing street urchins in our town there some people derailing our efforts, we want to give stern warning to such individuals that they will be arrested and charged,” he said in Eldoret town, Thursday

“Some of them make more than Sh1,000 per day making it hard to remove them from our streets,” he added.

He reiterated that they have embarked on a program of rescuing street children and taking them to the rescue center where they will get food, shelter, and education.

“We have rescued over 100 street children and the process is ongoing until all of them are out of our streets. People should come together to support the initiative since it has more good than harm,” noted Yator

He gave a warning to parents who leave their children wander in the streets that his office would ensure they are traced found and prosecuted.

“We are working with the county administrators such as chiefs and their assistants who will help us in identifying parents of the street children," he said.
