Eldoret town has for a long time been known as a city of champions.

In deed it is still a city of champions not only in athletics but also in literature. Literary prowess has been preserved to city dwellers. Almost all established authors and literary critics live in Nairobi.

This is not the case anymore in Eldoret where writers, both established and amateurs, have decided put their lamps on top of the table, not below the table as has been the case in the past. University students have also joined the team of authors and performance acts.

Theatre groups in Eldoret town are being revived and a new team to steer the growth of art has been selected by the ministry of sports and culture during a workshop for artists that was held at Hotel Horizon in Eldoret town.

Moi University, department of literature has a strong theatre group that performs plays every Saturdays in town. A group of poets from the region also formed Eldoret Poets Association that organises literary workshops, poetry, spoken word and music events in town every month.

The coffee is a theatre group at University of Eldoret, The Genesis is a poetry group formed by youths from different churches in Eldoret, The Monthly Period is yet another poetry group in Moi University.

Utafiti Foundation is a publishing firm based in Eldoret town that helps to nurture writing talents in budding writers in Eldoret and its environment. The firm edits and publishes works of literature scholars in Eldoret town.

With all these support from private firms, universities and government, literature in Eldoret is taking shape and now literature lovers do not need to travel all the way to Nairobi to enjoy a good play, live vocal music and poetry.
