Nyanza elected leaders have been accused of failing to mobilise people to register as voters as the month long mass voter registration comes to an end today.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Nyanza Central Coordinator George Oyugi specifically blamed MPs and MCAs from the region for their laxity to mobilise people to register.
Oyugi said the Commission failed to realise its target in the region that comprises Kisumu, Siaya and Homa Bay counties for lack of coordination by the elected leaders.
“I must laud the efforts of our three governors but for MPs and MCAs, they have failed us terribly. I expected them to mobilise their supporters who are not registered,” he said.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Tuesday, the IEBC coordinator said the Commission has failed to meet its desired target in the three counties.
Oyugi said if there was a coordinated effort among elected leaders then the Commission would have reached a good number of unregistered voters.
He announced that after the expiry of mass voter registration, those who have not registered will be required to visit constituency offices for registration.
“Let those who have not registered not to lose hope that if the exercise ends today they will not have a chance to register. The exercise will continue at the IEBC constituency offices,” he said.
