KFS Mau regional officer Sylvester Macodera said the fence has also reduced the number of cases where residents destroy trees in the forest and burn charcoal.

Mr Macodera said the forest gives life to a number of rivers in the area, a source that “must be protected in all circumstances to prevent future harsh environmental conditions”.

Another officer from Rhino Ark Organization Joseph Mutongu, said the 43 kilometers long fence has helped conserve Mountain Bongo type of antelopes (Tragelaphus eurycerus) which were slowly becoming extinct in the country.

The Bongo is a large species of antelope that is found inhabiting the jungles and forests of Eastern, Western and Central Africa.
