The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has announced that electricity bills will be reduced from next month.
This is due to the ongoing rains that have filled dams leading to a cheaper production of hydroelectric power.
According to the regulator, increased hydropower generation will further cut the use of expensive thermal and ultimately reduce the monthly adjustable fuel cost charge in electricity power bills.
Last week, the power distributor KenGen said that some of its dams are full and had started spilling over an indication that the cost of electricity was going to be cheaper.
Rising power demand across the country prompted KPLC to step up the use of expensive thermal power, denying consumers cheaper electricity at a time when the use of low cost geothermal and hydropower had increased.
Reacting to the news, residents of Kibera said it was a good move that will enable the area to grow economically.
“High power charges have always been a big hindrance to the growth of different sectors in this area. To us it's good news when we hear about low power charges," said Malcolm Ochieng, a welder in the area.
The residents have, however, urged the concerned parties to ensure that the bills are standardised.
“We would like ERC to have a fixed charge for electricity because adjusting every month is a bit hectic. The issue of fluctuation in prices should not arise, “said Jessica Mwangale.
