Soweto residents in Kibera have accused Kenya power of causing them losses due to prepaid electricity.
They have claimed that use of prepaid electricity has caused losses to residents in the area due to fires caused by electricity.
"Using of prepaid electricity and the so-called token thing is a total disappointment. It is better we get back to postpaid electricity. Since postpaid electricity started to be used in the slums, fires have been on the rise," said Francis Gwaro.
"My electrical equipment such as televisions, radios, bulbs get overheated with the prepaid electricity. Every week I must take my television and decoder for repair. I do not like this type of power consumption. Kenya power must come up with a solution to avoid unnecessary damage to our electrical appliances due to power failure and too much power from the said token, "stated Julius Odinga.
"Once there is a power blackout when the power comes back most of the electrical appliances gets destroyed due too much power. In the previous postpaid electricity, we were not facing all these problems. Radio and television repairers have taken advantage to repair TVs and radios at a costly price," added Odinga.
The residents have threatened that they will remove all the wires connecting prepaid electricity if Kenya power with their landlords does not take action to solve the issue.
