The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) Chairman Simon Gicharu has said that a project to power all public schools in Nakuru County will begin within a period of three weeks.

Speaking on Tuesday in Nakuru Town when he paid Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugu a courtesy call, Gicheru said plans are at a advanced stage to connect all public schools in the county with electricity.

“Over 84 percent of the plan is complete and within a few weeks connection of electricity will start," said Gicheru.

Gicheru also said that they are working closely with the Kenya Power and Lightning Company (KPLC) to ensure people in the rural areas access electricity at affordable rates.

“REA is committed to the provision of affordable power at the grassroot level," said Gicheru.

He revealed that the authority will supply electricity to over 22,000 public primary schools across the country by next year.

Governor Mbugua hailed the move by the government in addressing the issues of electricity and boosting education .

“We expect the learning in these institutions will improve as students will use the power  for computer studies," said Kinuthia.

He noted that many public schools have been experiencing challenges due to lack of power and said the connection will help in academic improvement.
