Kenya Wildlife Service spokesman Paul Gathitu confirmed the incident, saying they were informed of the killing of the jumbo, who died by the time they arrived at the scene, at 5am.

Gathitu said the driver of the truck that hit the animal did not notice it as it was dark.

"We cleared the area and took the ivory," he told the Star.

The death of the elephant is likely to re-ignite the debate on dangers of the Standard Gauge Railway passing through the Nairobi National Park.

Wildlife Direct CEO Paula Kahumbu said KWS should stop lying to Kenyans that the SGR will have no impact on animal movement in the park.
